Usability of Interactive Systems

Usability of web-based systems is traditionally associated with 'classical' Internet content - web sites with text, photos, audio and video files. This, however, was how matters were in the past, while we now see a new trend immerging, where users interact with systems, and thus participate in building their interface and functionality. The future of web-based systems in Europe and worldwide is associated with the possibility of genuine multi-modal communication that supplements or completely replaces the standard keyboard and mouse. Examples of such communication are speech, gestures, touch, eye movements and even thought. New ways of interacting with computers lead to new challenges to usability studies. What these challenges and the methods used to deal with them are will be the subject of this forthcoming workshop.

Maurice Grinberg has a PhD in theoretical nuclear physics. Since 1999 he has been working in the field of cognitive sciences in the Central and East European Center for Cognitive Science at the New Bulgarian University. His research interests are related to cognitive modelling in decision making, analogy, memory and multi-agent systems, and experimental work in experimental economics. He participates in several European projects – MindRaces, Rascalli, Welkom, and Analogy – aimed at the understanding of human cognition and its application in artificial cognitive systems, e.g. robots and intelligent software agents. He teaches several courses like Neural networks, Cognitive modelling, Introduction to the dynamical system approach to cognitive science, etc. |
